Introduction

Dunn-Edwards has just named its 2027 Color of the Year, and it's a shade that challenges everything we thought we knew about neutral palettes. French Press Coffee brings a rich, multidimensional brown to the forefront, proving that brown can be both grounding and unexpectedly vibrant.

What Happened

At the start of the new design season, Dunn-Edwards unveiled French Press Coffee (DEBN 07) as the chosen hue for 2027. The color is described as a deep, atmospheric brown with a subtle plum undertone that only reveals itself as light shifts throughout the day. Unlike typical beiges, this shade offers depth and complexity, making it a standout choice for anyone looking to refresh their home.

Why This Matters

Neutral paint colors often get a bad rap for being too safe, but French Press Coffee breaks that mold. Its warm brown base paired with a delicate purple shift creates a sophisticated backdrop that works in diverse settings. Designers can use it to add warmth to a bedroom, introduce character to a bathroom, or make a subtle statement in a living room. The color's adaptability, shifting from cozy to contemporary depending on lighting and accents, makes it a versatile tool for any makeover.

Key Takeaways

  • Rich plum undertone: The slight purple hue sets French Press Coffee apart from standard browns, giving it multidimensional depth.
  • Light-responsive: The color's tone changes with natural and artificial light, revealing complexity throughout the day.
  • Wide pairing potential: Works beautifully with clay tones, earthy greens, creams, warm woods, and metals, or can be paired with cool silver tones for a modern twist.
  • Beyond the walls: The hue isn't limited to interiors; it can be used on shutters, garage doors, or even an entire exterior for a cohesive, moody curb appeal.
  • Say goodbye to sad beige: This choice proves you can embrace brown without settling for flat, lifeless neutrals.

Conclusion

French Press Coffee offers a fresh take on a classic neutral, delivering warmth, complexity, and unexpected character. Whether you're planning a full home makeover or a single accent wall, this moody brown has the versatility to elevate any space. Give it a try in the year ahead and discover how a sophisticated shade of brown can transform your home.
